New Treasure Island Beach trail designs unveiled March 8th
After a year in the works, Treasure Island moves forward with the next phase of improving the city’s nearly mile-long gulf front beach trail. Completed plans for the trail overhaul project will be unveiled at Special Commission Workshop on Thursday, March 8th at 6pm in Treasure Island City Hall, 120 108th Avenue. The Public is welcomed to attend and provide comments on the plans. The trail plans, developed by Graham Booth Landscape Architects of St. Petersburg, feature a winding concrete sidewalk that spans the entire length of the current trail, connecting a series of beach access points, from 119th Avenue southward to 104th Avenue. Along the trail, showers, native landscaping, trash receptacles, environmental signs and turtle-friendly lighting will mark beach access points. Built in the mid-1960’s along the city’s “Miracle Mile” of hotels and motels, the Treasure Island Beach Trail has remained almost unchanged for over 40 years. An additional lane was added in 1998. After the plans are reviewed on March 8, the city will seek bids, select a contractor, and construct the trail. Construction is planned to begin in late May or early June, with completion targeted for September 2012. The Public is welcome to attend this important workshop to provide comments on the Beach Trail.
